Transport in Milan

Central Milan is a very expansive area. Public transport is very cheap and highly efficient. One can travel between different central sights entirely on foot but as one goes further towards the outskirts, the streets become dull such that it is better to jump into a tram.

Public transport in Milan is very expansive. It covers extensive areas both within the city and in the suburbs. If you plan to be in Milan for several days, it is advisable that you get a map that shows all the main routes that connect different points. One type of ticket lasts for 75 minutes. It is ideal for people who live and work in Milan. Tourists are better off buying tickets that can be used for either 24 or 48 hours.

One can buy tickets at kiosks that sell newspapers as well as in bars and in the Tourism Information Center. The Milan underground train network is very user-friendly. It has three lines. These lines are distinguished by both color and number. One has to be keen on the area where the line separates so as to be sure he is on the right branch.

Buses and trams run very busily around Milan. Every stop is clearly marked on the sides of every street. Maps are helpful sources of information on various Milan locations.  When one is driving behind trams, care should be taken to avoid accidents. The best precaution is maintaining a safe distance between you and the tram. Sometimes the trams are forced to stop abruptly so as to pick passengers at various stops. Ordinarily, they are required to leave space such that vehicles can pass in between the tram and the pavement but this doesn’t always happen.

The principal railway station in Milan is Stazione Centrale. The station is a fantastic architectural marvel that dominates the northeastern region of Milan. Trains from this station cover almost every area of the city as well as other major Italian cities such as Rome, Florence and Bologna. It takes only four and a half hours for a train to reach Rome from Milan. At the platform level is where the Tourist Information Center is located. The center is partly concealed in a shopping arcade. The ticket hall can be seen from this location. It is on the floor below and many automatic machines make the process of buying tickets easy and fast.
